Current Stock Show
We all get excited whenever a new exhibition opens, and rightly so. But exhibition time is not the only time to visit the gallery. Between exhibitions, we show stock works from our stable artists, many for the first time. We also preview works from new artists who have an exhibition coming up in the near future. In some cases, this is the first time the works have been seen in a public space. Consequently, our stock shows are every bit as intriguing and exciting as our monthly exhibitions. And the variety is fabulous. Our current stock show, for example, features;
· Tanya Kingston (oil on canvas)
· Christopher Bodame (wax pencil on paper)
· Gabriel Jimenez (encaustic painting on board)
· Bernd Jansons (digital painting)
· Jennifer Gabbay (oil and acrylic on canvas and paper)
· Mel Jones (pochoir on paper)
· Ulla Heckel (oil on board and canvas)
· Kendal Heyes (woodcut prints on paper)
· Michael Byrt (watercolour and ink on paper)
So, why not call in and be surprised. Prices range from $125 to $4000 and for this show as a special incentive the Gallery will give a 10% discount on all sales of pictures on exhibition. Just mention the offer in this newsletter when you come in. The stock show runs until Sunday 5th July.
July Exhibition
Coming up this July, we are thrilled to announce “Out of the Blue”, an exhibition of works by Robyn P Clarke and Paul du Moulin. Robyn’s formal art education was at the East Sydney Technical College (National Art School) and she graduated in art from Alexander Mackie College (COFA). She later added to this a Masters in Printmaking from the National Art School.
She has had numerous exhibitions in Melbourne, including at the Stuart Gerstman Gallery, Roar Studios and Distelfink Gallery. In Sydney she has shown at the Holdsworth Gallery, Barry Stern, and with the Harris Courtin Gallery, all in the Paddington/Wollahra area. She has been Craft Critic for The Age newspaper in Melbourne, and has written on craft for the revised edition of the Encyclopaedia of Australian Art. She appears in the Dictionary of Australian Women Artists (editor Max Germaine). She has taught art (secondary and tertiary) in Melbourne, Sydney and London.
Since she came to the Blue Mountains in 2003 she has shown with the Hat Hill Gallery in Blackheath, has been a guest exhibitor at the Gallery Blackheath, and has been part of a three-woman exhibition at the Blackheath Art Society Gallery. She has won Second Prize at a recent Blackheath Art Society exhibition. Her work is part of the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Victoria and the Geelong Art Gallery, and she is represented in many private collections in New South Wales and Victoria.
Paul du Moulin's art has been described as "incredibly varied, from subtle landscapes, fine etchings, haunting portraits; to surreal urban-scapes". Much of Paul's work can be viewed as a series of cultural artefacts, created as a result of a particular sensitivity to the subtle shifts constantly occurring in both the natural and man-made world. With training and a background in drawing, water colouring, oil painting, sculpture, new media and printmaking it is not only his subject matter, style and technique which varies, but also the medium in which he works.
Last year Paul went to Beijing China for an artists residency and the year before that to the Czech Republic - Cesky Krumlov. This year he is studying for an MFA - Master of Fine art by Research at COFA UNSW, where he is looking at the visual language of networks by exploring cultural identity. He will use the research gathered in Beijing last year, which includes documents from the cultural revolution. He will break these ideas down into a network and then translate them into a visual language using drawing and painting. All the while using his Australian notion of identity. Next year he will go to France, where he will research his ancestral connections using his French name as the catalyst for further research. The work he is currently preparing for this show relates to the work from Cesky Krumlov and his explorations into depicting the Australian landscape.
Robyn and Paul’s exhibition runs from 8th to 19th July with the formal opening on Saturday 11th July from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. As usual, light refreshments will be provided and there will be live entertainment by Jon Roberts on guitar and Chris Lines on bass. Please join us for this if you can.

School Exhibitions to Start Soon
Planning has begun for the first of our school exhibitions later in the year. This will present the artworks of year 6 from Katoomba North Public School and year 7 from Katoomba High School. The dates are still being decided but are likely to be towards the end of September. All artworks for exhibition will be chosen by the school’s respective art teachers in collaboration with the Gallery. We have also started talking to some of the other schools in the area and are hopeful public exhibitions of artworks by children from most, if not all, Blue Mountains schools will become a regular feature in the not too distant future. More on these exciting events will be announced as details are fleshed out.
Westmead Hospital Art Loan
Arrangement have now been finalised for 15 works from the Gallery to go on loan for show at the Westmead Children’s’ Hospital from 28th August to 25th September. We are hopeful this can be extended to other hospitals, including our own at Katoomba as time goes by.
New Merchandise
The Gallery has extended its range of merchandise with new art books sourced from the Queensland Art Gallery and other art book suppliers, music CD’s by local artists including Peta Williams and Georg Mertens, glass art by Karen McPhee, wooden artefacts by Paul Verstegen, new collectable toys by John Cervenka and games and puzzles from Naef Spiele AG of Switzerland (including some artefacts licensed by the Bauhaus Museum of Berlin). In addition, we stock jewellery by Leslie Hunter-Webb, Berta Wakim and Robyn Clarke, ceramics by Robyn Clarke, screen-printed clothing by Sun-Ra Tree and Bernd Jansons and art cards by Bernd Jansons. These all make special gifts for someone dear or just to spoil yourself.
Gallery Goes High-Tech
After much anticipation, we have finally installed our new video equipment, including a large-screen plasma display. This will be used for multi-media works running on DVD. We are also working to hook up the Internet to the system to allow visitors to view artworks and art galleries in the virtual 3D world of Second Life. More on this soon as we come to grips with the technology. Artists working in the multi-media and/or animation realm are invited to contact the Gallery to discuss possible collaborations.
