Daring Artist launches her dynamic Blue Mountains Art in Sydney
Local Blue Mountains artist Mel Jones is sailing on two highly successful shows in two months, the first was a group show at Braemar gallery, and the second show has just finished at Event Horizon gallery in Katoomba. In January Mel brings her dynamic interpretation of the Blue Mountains and Outback NSW landscape to the Palm House in the beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens of Sydney. ‘Observing Nature’ is open 7 days a week 10am to 4pm from Wednesday January 7th to Sunday the 24th. The official opening will be by Dr Norman Gillespie, an avid supporter of the arts in Australia and former CEO of the Sydney Opera House, on Saturday the 9th of January at 1pm.
“I feel so privileged to be exhibiting in Sydney in the Royal Botanic Gardens. No only are the gardens stunning, they inspire me to reach for new expressions within my work.”
Mel Jones is becoming a highly sought-after Pochoir inspired Artist. Pochoir is a French hand cut stencilling technique characterised by its crisp lines and brilliant palette. It is clear that Mel has a natural instinct for this bold technique, combining Pochoir with mixed media elements to create her unique vibrant landscapes.
Mel learned this unique technique after taking a class with noted artist Jane Canfield nearly two years ago. ‘It was a life changing experience, though the class was only over an afternoon, I honestly walked out as a different person. Suddenly here was the technique that I felt I’d been searching for, and all these images and possibilities flooded into my mind. For that experience I am so grateful to Jane and her compassionate nature to teach and share her art with others.”
Mel has developed her Pochoir technique to embrace its rich heritage and bring it into a new age. Embodying the quintessentially Australian Blue and Grey Gums of the mountain gullies to create her distinctive stylised compositions.
Each day over the course of the exhibition Mel will be demonstrating her style of Pochoir at 11am, having proved this to be very popular from earlier exhibitions. “I thoroughly enjoyed sharing my style of Pochoir and how I create with others during the exhibition at the Braemar Gallery this year. Most importantly I learned that people really appreciate more of what you do if you can share a part of yourself with them.”
Studying fine arts in the 90’s Mel has exhibited in group and solo shows throughout the Blue Mountains and was recently a finalist in the Westmead Art Competition 2009 sponsored by the Arab Bank Australia, her art work is on permanent display as a part of the SWAHS collection. ‘Observing Nature’ will be opened on January 9th at 1pm, all are welcome to join Mel Jones as she shares her art with Sydney.
Mel will also be holding afternoon Pochoir classes twice a week. For more info ph: 0417 250 630, bookings for the classes are essential and costs are involved. Please e-mail mel@journeymoonart.com or visit www.journeymoonart.com for more information.
